The other three people convicted in the case were Hector Porrata, 46, of Moreno Valley George Martinez, 44, of Apple Valley and Cara Cruz-Thompson, 47, of Victorville. He was accused of sending more than 50 letters to American International Group and Matrix Absence Management falsely claiming to have authority to negotiate, settle and collect payment on pending liens on behalf of doctors and hospitals. Montes used a surgery center he owned in La Habra for liens that he did not have the authority to collect, prosecutors said. The liens are put on when patients file the claims to ensure the doctors or hospitals are paid by the insurance company, prosecutors said. The case involved liens that doctors and hospitals put on workers’ compensation insurance claims. He pleaded guilty on June 7 to 122 felony counts, including 59 counts of grand theft, 59 counts of insurance fraud, three counts of tax evasion, and one count of conspiracy, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. Rene Montes, 42, is the last of four defendants to be sentenced in the case. A Riverside man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in state prison for his part in a conspiracy to defraud two insurance companies out of $1.4 million by illegally selling liens on workers’ compensation insurance claims, prosecutors said. ![]()
